 Extremity Fixation

The Orthofix Institute Orthopedic Medical Education program is the epicenter of a dynamic learning continuum for physicians and partners who wish to learn more about our extremity fixation products.

The history of the organization as well as the fundamentals of medical education is built from the principles of orthopedic researcher Giovanni de Bastiani and the philosophy to respect the biology of the bone. Each medical education program has been engineered with these fundamentals to deliver robust, comprehensive and challenging curriculums that are relevant to the needs of the company's practicing surgeons, residents and fellows. Learning focuses on a variety of patient management solutions – both temporary and definitive - for deformity correction, reconstruction, limb lengthening and trauma.

Our goal is to provide learning opportunities tailored to meet the needs of today's medical professional with practical training designed to help improve clinician proficiency, therapy outcomes and patient care. The physician curriculum will be sequenced into a learning continuum – from resident and fellows courses to the most advanced symposia. It includes comprehensive lab sessions, extensive case review and moderator-led peer discussion – all intended to provide an extensive base of knowledge. Workshops not only focus on comprehensive orthopedic hardware but include biologic and biostimulation patient management solutions. Our programs are facilitated by leading physician faculty who combine modern academic knowledge with their relevant clinical experiences.

Orthopedic courses are diverse and may feature:

  • Didactic Lectures
  • Hands-on Sawbone Workshops
  • Hands-on Cadaveric Workshops
  • Interactive Case Study Presentations and Discussions
  • Roundtable Clinical and Business Discussions
  • Hospital Based Observations

Initial invitations will be vetted through residency program directors with a keen interest in teaching circular ring fixation.
  • Pediatric and Reconstructive Orthopedics (PRO) – This weekend course brings pediatric and limb reconstruction orthopedic surgeons together to become familiar with the treatment and correction of traumatic deformities in children and adults, using external and internal fixation. This course includes case presentations and discussion of techniques to manage bone defects, deformity correction and limb reconstruction and lengthening. This course includes an anatomy lab and is taught by leading orthopedic surgeons from around the country.
  • Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Focus (FAF) – This weekend course is intended for experienced podiatrists with a desire to increase competencies and usage of external fixation and use it in their clinical practice. This course features broad exposure to a number of topics:  complex foot and ankle fractures, corrective treatment options for bunions, and severe foot and ankle deformity correction. It also includes an anatomic lab that highlights the Ankle Compression Nail (ACN), the Contours Lapidus Plating System and the TrueLok™ Ring Fixation System. This course is taught by leading podiatric surgeons and pioneers in external ring fixation.

The course will focus on a staged protocol for the treatment of the high energy trauma patient to decrease the incidence of complications and improve outcomes. We will also discuss the treatment options for both acute and chronically compromised patients suffering traumatic injuries.

Hospital Based Observation (HBO)

  • Hospital Based Observation for Fundamentals in External Fixation – The HBO program will become the stratified next level educational offering for a select number of podiatric residents who have successfully completed the Fundamentals in External Fixation course. These residents will be selected by the core faculty based on their course level and interest as well as clinical ability. This is an invitation only offering.

Extremity Fixation offers multiple opportunities for focused surgeon training.

  • Focused Surgeon Training (FST) at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas – In the event the surgeon has a desire to increase his or her competency strictly with the TrueLok Ring Fixation System, discuss case presentations, or review upcoming cases, the FST will be held at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas with Mikhail Samchukov, MD and Alex Cherkashin, MD. Various dates each month throughout the year are pre-arranged for this program.
