What is now Orthofix International began in Verona, Italy, from the work of orthopedic researcher Giovanni De Bastiani, of the University of Verona. Toward the end of the 1970s, De Bastiani proposed the concept of "dynamization," based on the natural ability of bone to repair itself. He developed a modular system of external axial frame devices that could be fitted to a bone, allowing micromovement at the fracture site to stimulate bone healing. Together with a group of surgeons and an industrial engineer, De Bastiani founded Orthofix in 1980 in order to continue the development of these devices and to bring them to market. By the 1990s, our products were sold in more than 50 countries.
Today, Orthofix is a diversified, global medical device company focused on improving patients' lives by providing superior reconstructive and regenerative orthopedic and spine solutions to physicians worldwide. Headquartered in Lewisville, TX, the company has four strategic business units that include BioStim, Biologics, Extremity Fixation and Spine Fixation. Orthofix products are widely distributed via the company's sales representatives, distributors and subsidiaries. In addition, Orthofix is collaborating on research and development activities with leading clinical organizations such as the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation and the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
